Explore Nafpaktos

Nafpaktos is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets — a medieval harbour town steeped in history, lapped by crystal-clear water, and surrounded by forested hills. Everything below is within easy reach of your doorstep.

🏰
Historic Site
The Venetian Castle
One of the largest and best-preserved castles in Greece, with five successive defensive walls climbing from the harbour all the way to the hilltop acropolis. The panoramic views over the Gulf of Corinth are unmissable. Entry to the inner citadel is just €2 — allow 3–4 hours.
Landmark
The Venetian Harbour
A perfectly preserved horseshoe-shaped harbour with twin fortified towers at its mouth, bobbing fishing vessels, and a ring of cafés and tavernas. The undisputed soul of the town — especially magical at golden hour when the ancient stone walls glow amber.
⚔️
History & Culture
Battle of Lepanto & Cervantes Statue
In 1571, one of history’s greatest naval battles was fought just off this shore. A bronze statue of Miguel de Cervantes — author of Don Quixote — stands at the harbour entrance, honouring his bravery in the battle where he lost the use of his left hand. The Botsaris Tower houses a permanent exhibition of 80 artworks depicting the battle.
🏖️
Beach & Nature
Psani & Gribovo Beaches
Two Blue Flag beaches flank the town — Psani to the west with crystal-clear shallow waters, perfect for families, and Gribovo to the east, a 1 km stretch of fine pebbles shaded by ancient sycamore trees. Both are lined with tavernas, cafés, and seafront promenades. Cars are banned in summer so the waterfront is blissfully pedestrian.
🌉
Architecture
Rio–Antirrio Bridge
One of the longest cable-stayed bridges in the world, spanning the Gulf of Corinth between the Greek mainland and the Peloponnese. Visible from both town beaches, it makes for a striking backdrop — ancient landscape meets modern engineering. Drive across it to reach Patras and the wider Peloponnese in minutes.
🌿
Outdoor & Hiking
The Nafpaktia Mountains
Behind the town, lush forested hills rise steeply into the Nafpaktia range — home to chestnut groves, mountain villages, and dramatic scenery. In autumn the slopes blaze with colour. Ideal for hiking, cycling, and day trips to traditional villages largely untouched by tourism. A complete change of pace just 15 minutes from the harbour.
📖
Did You Know?
Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, fought in the Battle of Lepanto here in 1571. Despite suffering a fever before the battle, he refused to stay below decks — and was wounded three times, losing the use of his left hand. He later wrote: “I lost the movement of my left hand for the glory of my right.”
